Blue Cross
Blue Shield of Texas
began in 1929 as a unique non-profit insurance company for
Texas teachers
with the mission "to bring hospitalization coverage within the reach of
everyone who earns a paycheck.” Known back then as the Baylor Plan it
the genesis of modern health insurance and drew interest in hospitals
across the country as they scrambled to set up similar plans. In 1944 it
was merged into the
Texas
institution we know today as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.
The Genesis Had a
History of Firsts
Blue
Cross Blue Shield of Texas,
in line with its mission, was the first in the state to offer insurance
products that other companies didn’t or wouldn't at the time. The most
notable being:

Coverage to the poor and elderly before the advent of government
programs

Coverage to migrant farm workers
·
Coverage for catastrophic illnesses, such as polio, leukemia and
diphtheria
·
Coverage for cancer treatment
·
Coverage for infants from birth
·

The Tradition of Caring Continues Today

Health Insurance Risk Pool
- providing access to health insurance for Texans who otherwise
might not be able to obtain coverage. They were the first and only
insurance company to bid on this program.

a medical care program for eligible low-income individuals.

Care Van Program
- a public-private immunization effort designed to help the
medically underserved of all ages.
